Mathematics is one subject that is not easy, because at UNY campus students and students majoring in math education still find it difficult. Such conditions, as if thinking there is no best way to teach mathematics.
Many of the obstacles that an impact on mathematics was considered difficult, as: understanding the meaning of the theory, how to apply, the existing system, environmental conditions and learning facilities. The difficulty was increased teacher if the teacher handle the differences in mathematical ability of the student, so that the teacher teaches math problems quickly when teachers were pursuing KKM be completed. In addition, teachers must be able to motivate student to learn and develop the technology to learn math in order NEM high value targets in accordance with the syllabus. Teachers also seemed no other alternative except to teach mathematics only rely on the methods of exploration.
And we all know a lot of methods that can be used, for example: the lecture method, the method of appearance, method demonstration, discussion methods, methods of independent study, programmed learning methods, methods of stimulation, the method of discordant opinions, the case study method, project method, the method of playing a role , methods seminars, symposiums method, inductive method and deductive method. All of these methods can be used if the teacher is able master nature of mathematics, so the teacher knows the right method to teach mathematics at student.
The nature of mathematics, is;
1. Mathematics is search
activities patterns and relationships
The
implication of
this view, teachers gave students the
opportunity to conduct discovery and investigation of patterns to determine the
relationship, giving students the chance to experiment with different ways,
encourage students to discover the existence of (sequence, difference, comparison,
grouping), encouraging students draw a general conclusion, helping students
understand and discover the relationship between understanding one another.
2. Mathematics is the creativity that
requires imagination, intuition and invention
The
implication of
this view, teachers encourage initiative and
provide an opportunity to think differently, encourage curiosity, the desire to
ask, denied the ability and the ability estimate, appreciate the unexpected
discovery as beneficial rather than take it as a mistake, encourage students to
discover the structure and design of mathematical, encourages students to
appreciate the discovery of the other students, encourage students to think
reflexively, did not recommend the use of a particular method.
3. Mathematics is a problem solving
activities
The
implication of
this view, the teacher should provide an
environment that stimulates learning math problems, help students solve
mathematical problem using his own way, helps students learn the necessary
information to solve mathematical problems, encouraging students to think
logically, consistently, systematically and develop a system of documentation /
records, develop abilities and skills to solve problems, helping students know
how and when to use various visual aids / media such as mathematics education:
a compass, calculator, etc.
4. Mathematics is a tool of
communication
The
implication of
this view, teachers should encourage students
to recognize the nature of mathematics, encouraging students to make an example
of the nature of mathematics, encouraging students to explain the nature of
mathematics, encouraging students to give reasons for the necessity of
mathematical activities, encouraging students to talk about math problems,
encouraging students to read and write mathematics, to appreciate the mother
tongue students in discussing mathematics.
